About 30 new citizens are welcomed into New Zealand and the Hastings District each month at a Citizenship Ceremony held in the Hastings District Council chambers. Each new citizen swears the oath or affirmation of allegiance and is presented with their Certificate of Citizenship. Each family is then presented with a kowhai tree from the council to commemorate the date.
Tonight was Sandra Hazlehurst’s first Citizenship Ceremony as Acting Mayor after Mayor Lawrence Yule took a leave of absence. Chief executive Ross McLeod officiated, with a performance by Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre.
