Tonight’s Citizenship Ceremony at the Hastings District Council was Mayor Lawrence Yule’s last before he resigns later this year. Councillors honoured him with a farewell speech, a waiata and haka.
About 30 new citizens are welcomed into New Zealand and the Hastings District each month at a Citizenship Ceremony held in the Hastings District Council chambers. Each new citizen swears the oath or affirmation of allegiance and is presented with their Certificate of Citizenship. Each family is then presented with a kowhai tree from the council to commemorate the date.
Mayor Lawrence Yule and chief executive Ross McLeod officiated at this month’s ceremony, with a performance by Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre.
